Lavender. A meta-analysis of over 100 studies and >1000 people found that lavender significantly reduces anxiety levels. Lavender is known to reduce stress, anxiety, and possibly even mild pain. One 6-week study of adults with generalized anxiety disorder found that lavender oil performed as well as a common anti-anxiety drug. In addition, a significant effect was found for lavender compared to controls for degree of contentedness, indicating that lavender is capable of elevating mood, or at least maintaining good mood during the completion of a challenging battery of tests. It has been shown that the smell of lavender can significantly affect the rate of errors made in the mathematical and letter counting tests. In the presence of the odor of lavender, 108 subjects made fewer errors than in the presence of no odor.
